From Canalloween to the Boat Parade: How the Venice Canals Do the Holidays

Why would a boat parade give prizes to bridges and houses that never move?

When the Venice Canals Association hands out its Holiday Boat Parade awards each December, it gives 1st, 2nd and 3rd place to the best boats, the best bridges and the best canalside houses. The grand prize is called "The Sandy." According to Yo! Venice's coverage of the 2025 parade, it goes to the entry that judges say best captures the true spirit of the Venice Canals.

That prize list explains the whole season. From Halloween through mid-December, the canals' calendar is built around the district itself: one small park, one loop of water and a set of footbridges. The decorations along the banks count as much as anything floating past them.

Three dates, and two of them at Linnie Canal Park

The Venice Canals Association's events page lists three dates between now and the end of the year. The association is the neighborhood group that runs these events, and each one has its own volunteer chair.

Event Date Time Where
Canalloween Saturday, Oct 31 5 to 6 p.m. Linnie Canal Park
Holiday Toy Drive Sunday, Dec 6 2 to 5 p.m., Santa 4 to 5 p.m. Linnie Canal Park
Holiday Boat Parade Sunday, Dec 13 4 p.m. onward On the canals

The page doesn't print a year next to these dates. Two clues suggest they're for this season: the same page lists the association's next annual meeting as January 25, 2027, and all three dates land on weekends in 2026. Treat them as the association's posted schedule, and check its page as each date gets closer.

Canalloween is a one-hour costume party

The association describes Canalloween as "for everyone," though it adds that the event "spends more focus on kids and families." It's a costume party in the park with pizza and music. The event runs a single hour, 5 to 6 p.m. on Halloween itself.

The toy drive works with the Fire Department

On December 6, Linnie Canal Park hosts the association's Holiday Toy Drive, held with the Los Angeles Fire Department's Drive Through with Santa. Toys go to the department's Spark of Love campaign. The drive runs 2 to 5 p.m., and Santa is there from 4 to 5. The same listing already calls the 2026 drive "a great success," even though it hasn't happened yet. That line looks like leftover copy from a past year, so rely on the posted date and times.

The parade a week later moves the season off the park lawn and onto the water.

How the parade route loops the grid

The canal district has six canals laid out in a grid, crossed by nine pedestrian footbridges, according to the Venice Canals Association. The parade is planned to use that grid. Here's the route as Yo! Venice reported it for the 44th parade on December 14, 2025:

  1. Boats gather at 3:30 p.m.
  2. The parade starts at 4 p.m. where Grand Canal meets Carroll Canal.
  3. Boats head north along Carroll Canal.
  4. They turn east on Linnie Canal.
  5. Then north on Howland Canal.
  6. Then east on Sherman Canal.
  7. The route finishes back on Grand Canal.

The loop is the reason bridges and houses can compete. A fixed route that winds through most of the grid passes a long run of canalside homes and goes under several footbridges. Anyone decorating along those legs is putting their entry right in front of the judges and the crowd. The 2025 field was a mix of kayaks, duck boats and larger vessels, all competing for cash prizes.

Last year was the 44th parade, and Yo! Venice traced the tradition back to 1983. The association hasn't yet posted 2026 route details. Its listing gives only "DEC 13 - 4pm onward" and names Renee Kaplan and Monnie Fanning as parade chairs. Use the 2025 route as a guide to how the parade usually runs, not as a confirmed plan for this year.

Getting a boat, bridge or house into the judging

For boats, the 2025 rule was simple: register in advance or you can't win a prize. The entry form was printed on the parade flyer, and entrants scanned the completed form and emailed it to [email protected]. The association's events page says the parade is open to anyone who wants to decorate a boat. It calls the event "a showcase of our unique community."

The sources don't spell out how a bridge or house entry gets judged, so that's a question for the association before December 13. Even so, the categories make one thing clear. Homeowners along the route are competing too, alongside the paddlers.

Where to stand on December 13

In 2025, organizers asked spectators to line the bridges and walkways. Yo! Venice called the spot where Eastern Canal meets Carroll Canal a popular place to watch. Venice Paparazzi's 2025 preview also suggested starting at Eastern and Carroll. It mentioned a "Judges Bridge" without saying which footbridge that is.

The event is free and open to the public. Last year, The Cow's End Café on Washington Boulevard stayed open for hot chocolate and holiday treats.

Canal etiquette for parade day

You'll be watching on sidewalks that run right past people's front doors, and the association's visitor FAQ sets out the ground rules:

  • No tickets or reservations are needed to visit the canals.
  • There is no visitor parking inside the Canals. Park on the surrounding streets or in public lots.
  • Walk in from Pacific Avenue, Strongs Drive, Venice Boulevard or Washington Boulevard.
  • Walk your bike on the narrow canal sidewalks.
  • Respect residents' privacy and clean up after dogs.
  • Allow at least 45 minutes if you want to walk across several bridges and canals.

On parade day, that 45-minute walk is worth planning around. If you want a spot at Eastern and Carroll for a 4 p.m. start, arrive early enough to walk in from the edge of the district.

These rules exist partly because of what the district is. The Venice Canal Historic District is listed on the City of Los Angeles Historic Places Register and on the National Register of Historic Places, Reference No. 82002193. So the parade route passes historic homes and bridges, with people living in them and walking across them.

What else is on the Venice calendar before December

The canals carry most of Venice's late-year calendar, but a few events elsewhere help fill the weeks before the parade.

First Friday on Abbot Kinney. The Abbot Kinney Boulevard First Friday page lists the next edition for Friday, November 6, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. A December edition hadn't been posted when this was written.

A holiday poster contest for kids. The Venice Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the My Venice Holiday Poster Contest 2026 for Venice elementary students in grades K through 5. Venice Art Crawl judges will review the entries, and submissions are due by midnight on Tuesday, November 17.

Dinner nearby. The Tasting Kitchen reopened July 16 at 1633 Abbot Kinney Boulevard. It had been closed for three years after a March 2023 fire, and founding chef Casey Lane is back in the kitchen, according to Forbes.

Not yet scheduled: the Venice Sign Lighting. The Chamber's 14th annual Venice Holiday Sign Lighting took place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Windward Avenue and Pacific Avenue, according to Venice Paparazzi. As of mid-October, no 2026 date had been posted. Abbot Kinney's Holiday Block Party and Snow Day page only describes a 2019 weekend. Wait for new dates before planning around either one.

If you live along Carroll, Linnie, Howland or Sherman canals, last year's route on December 14 went right past your bridge and your front walk, and this year's parade is listed for December 13. The pre-registration email address for boat entries is [email protected].
